About ILWU Local 142

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 142, describes itself as representing the largest family of private-sector workers in Hawaii, with members in longshore operations, hotels, hospitality, and agriculture across all islands. Unlike public-sector unions, ILWU operates independently from the EUTF system.

How ILWU Benefits Differ from EUTF

ILWU Local 142 runs its own Health & Welfare Trust Fund, which administers health benefits separately from the state EUTF system:

  • Benefits are negotiated directly between ILWU and employers
  • Medical coverage is administered through HMSA
  • The trust fund covers both active and retired members
  • Benefit levels may vary by employer contract and industry
  • ILWU has its own pension plan, separate from the state Employees’ Retirement System

Medicare Coordination

ILWU retirees who become Medicare-eligible should coordinate with the ILWU Health & Welfare Trust to understand how their trust fund coverage works alongside Medicare. The coordination rules may differ from the EUTF system.

ILWU Pensioners Program

ILWU maintains 20 active pensioner clubs statewide. Any retiree 55 and older can join a pensioner club. These clubs provide community, advocacy, and support for retired workers.
